“Hagi Tudose” is a pearl of Romanian literature due to the language in which it was written, and the central character can sit – without false modesty – at the literary table of the great harpagons of the world. “Our” Tudose is monumental in his abjection and surreal in his paranoia: a miser who bites his fingernails to save on scissors and cuts the tail of the mutt so that the bedroom door closes faster when he lets the animal out, so that it won’t be cold.
